Coordinates Converter

Using the Coordinates Converter

Selecting a position on the map

  • Click or tap the map to place the marker, or drag the marker to a new position.
  • Double-click the map (or double-tap on a touchscreen) to zoom in.
  • Use the location button below the zoom controls to center the map on your current location.
Your browser may ask for location permission.
  • Use the layers button in the top-right corner to switch map style.
The OpenStreetMap and Esri Satellite layers allow the highest zoom level, so they are best suited for finding more precise coordinates.

Coordinate formats

  • GPS: decimal degrees.
South and west coordinates use a minus sign.
    Example: 48.143500, 17.108300.
  • APRS: degrees and decimal minutes (N/S for latitude, E/W for longitude).
    Latitude: DDMM.mmN or DDMM.mmS.
    Longitude: DDDMM.mmE or DDDMM.mmW.
    Example: 4808.61N 01706.50E.
  • Maidenhead locator: A grid reference of 4, 6 or 8 characters.
More characters identify a smaller, more precise square.
    Examples: JN88, JN88ND, JN88ND24.
  • DMS: degrees, minutes and decimal seconds (N/S for latitude, E/W for longitude).
    Example: 48° 08′ 36.60″ N, 17° 06′ 29.88″ E.
  • The Set button applies the entered coordinates to the map and converts them to the other coordinate formats.
  • The Copy button copies that coordinate format to the clipboard.

Maidenhead locator

  • Use the selector to choose a locator length of 4, 6 or 8 characters.
When you enter a locator manually, the selector automatically adjusts to the number of characters entered.
  • The Frame ON/OFF button toggles the locator square outline on the map.
  • The Set button selects the locator square's center and fits the square in view.

Share or open the position

  • The share button creates a link containing the selected coordinates and map layer.
A share menu may open. If sharing is unavailable, the link is copied.
When a shared link is open, selecting a new position on the map or changing the map layer updates the URL in the browser's address bar.
  • On mobile, the external-map button opens a map app.
On desktop, it opens the selected position in Google Maps.
